Mary Ellen Carron, Jr., Midfielder, Mount Sinai (N.Y.)
Junior midfielder Mary Ellen Carron, who is committed to Lehigh, combined for six caused turnovers, six draw controls, and nine ground balls in two wins last week for the Mustangs. She also scored a goal in each game as the fourth-ranked Mustangs extended their winning streak to 22 games. She finished her sophomore season with 13 goals and one assist as the Mustangs claimed the Class C state title with a win over Skaneateles (N.Y.).
Honorable mention: Kyra Harney, Bay Shore (N.Y.); Kerri Puckhaber, St. Anthony's (N.Y.), Bridget Weill, Farmingdale (N.Y.).
Game of the Week
Notre Dame (Mass.) at Scituate (Mass.), Tuesday
Led by coach Meredith Frank, the Notre Dame Academy Cougars open the defense of the Massachusetts Division 1 state championship with a Tuesday matchup at Scituate. The Cougars are coming off a 13-10 win over Longmeadow (Mass.) in the state championship game last season. Frank took over the Notre Dame program in 2011 after wrapping up a historic career at Northwestern where she finished with 210 points (152 goals, 58 assists). She won three state titles as a player at Westwood (Mass.). Midfielder Isabella O'Connor, who will play for the University of Florida, is the top returning player for the Cougars, who have won 16 straight.
Northeast Region Top 10
1. Manhasset (N.Y.), 2-0
The Indians rolled to a 14-5 win over South Side (N.Y.). Once again, Manhasset demonstrated its depth and versatility with four players scoring at least two goals. Kathryn Hallet and Sarah Phillips each finished with two goals and one assist for Manhasset. Erin Barry and Lindsey Ronbeck each added two goals. The Indians play at Long Beach (N.Y.) on Thursday.
2. St. Anthony's (N.Y.), 1-0
St. Anthony's, the six-time defending CHSAA champion, opened its season with a 17-6 win over St. John's the Baptist. Kerri Puckhaber finished with five goals and Izzy Mangan added four goals and two assists for St. Anthony's, which opened the season under new coach Summer Ferraro. Kasey Behr (Virginia) had two assists in the season-opening win.
3. Farmingdale (N.Y.), 3-0
Bridget Weill scored four goals and Chrissy Kelly added three goals and two assists for the Dalers (3-0) in a 12-1 win over Massapequa (N.Y.). Tara Wahl chipped in three goals for Farmingdale, which faces North Shore (N.Y.) this week.
4. Mount Sinai (N.Y.), 2-0
The Mustangs stretched their winning streak to 22 games with victories over Huntington (N.Y.) and Kings Park (N.Y). Mount Sinai won 13-11 over Huntington and 11-3 over Kings Park. Shayna Pirreca (Florida) and Kasey Mitchell, who has committed to Stony Brook, each had four goals and one assist in the opener.
5. Garden City (N.Y.), 2-0
Tara DeAngelo finished with three goals and one assist and Kerry Defliese added three goals for the Trojans in a strong 12-6 win over Cold Spring Harbor (N.Y.), which fell to 0-3 after earning a preseason national ranking. Michaela Bruno chipped in two goals and three assists for Garden City.
6. Darien (Conn.), 0-0
The Blue Wave begins the season on April 9 against Norwalk. Darien starts the season riding a 19-game winning streak and its only loss last season was in double overtime against Garden City. Dillon Schoen, who is headed to Stanford, leads the Blue Wave.
7. Bay Shore (N.Y.), 2-0
The Marauders opened the season with impressive wins over North Babylon (N.Y.) and Sachem East (N.Y.). Bay Shore earned a 19-5 win over North Babylon and 13-8 victory over Sachem East. Duke-bound senior Kyra Harney totaled six goals and five assists in the two wins. Katie Kirk won seven draw controls in the win over North Babylon.
8. Suffern (N.Y.), 0-0
The Mounties, Class A state semifinalists a year ago, will start the season with four straight games at home. They open the season on April 1 against Nyack (N.Y.).
9. Notre Dame (Mass.), 0-0
Isabella O'Connor, who is headed to Florida, scored 56 goals last season to help the Cougars claim their first Division I state championship. Notre Dame is coached by former Northwestern standout Meredith Frank. Notre Dame is currently on a 16-game winning streak. It opens the season on Tuesday at Scituate (Mass.).
10. New Canaan (Conn.), 0-0
The Rams, who will try to defend their Class M state title this season, lost just two games last season, both to Darien (Conn.). New Canaan opens the season on April 9 at Stamford (Conn.)
Christian Brothers Academy (N.Y.), the defending Class B state champ, graduated two All-Americans in Marisa Romeo (Harvard) and Kelsey Poplawski (Syracuse), but demonstrated their depth and talent in a season-opening 21-0 win over Whitesboro (N.Y.). Six players scored two goals each for CBA. Lilly Hunt and Hannah Werner each finished with two goals and two assists for the Brothers.
Ward Melville (N.Y.) ended Northport's season last year
with a 15-14 win in the Section VIII Class A semifinals. This year
could be different. Behind senior attacker/midfielder Allie
Pavinelli, who is headed to Florida, Northport secured a 13-5 win
over the Patriots to improve to 2-0. Pavinelli finished with five
goals and an assist. She has 12 goals and four assists in two
