MLL Weekly Awards: Boyle, White, Matthews

from press release

BOSTON – Major League Lacrosse, the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, announced Monday its weekly award winners for the week ending July 29, 2012, according to MLL Commissioner David Gross. Boston Cannons attackman Ryan Boyle was named as the MLL Offensive Player of the Week while Rochester Rattlers defenseman Joel White earned MLL Defensive Player of the Week notice.

In addition, Denver Outlaws attackman Mark Matthews was selected as the recipient of the Cascade MLL Rookie of the Week award.

Honored as the MLL Offensive Player of the Week for the sixth time in his career, Boyle scored two goals and added six assists as the Cannons defeated the MLL-leading Chesapeake Bayhawks by a 16-13 margin at Harvard Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The win allowed the defending MLL champion Cannons to move into in a tie for fourth place in the MLL standings.

Boyle, who earned the 14th Bud Light MLL Player of the Game honor of his career, tallied three of his six assists during the third quarter when Boston used a four-goal run to turn a one-goal deficit into a 12-9 lead they did not relinquish. He also tallied two assists during the Cannons' five-goal second quarter.

The MLL's third-leading scorer with 46 points, Boyle ranks second in the MLL with 30 assists this season while also contributing 16 goals.

Meanwhile, White helped the Rattlers remain alive in the race for a spot in the 2012 MLL Championship Weekend presented by Warrior with a 14-13 victory over the Ohio Machine on Saturday night at Sahlen's Stadium. White posted a team-high seven ground balls and anchored a Rochester defense that allowed just three goals in the first half.

White, who was named as the MLL Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in his career, leads the Rattlers with 49 ground balls in 9 games this year. He has also scored four goals with six assists.

Matthews helped the Outlaws move into a tie for first place in the MLL standings on Saturday night as Denver earned a 21-12 road victory over the Hamilton Nationals at Ron Joyce Stadium. Honored as the Cascade Rookie of the Week for the third time this season, Matthews scored three goals and added two assists as the Outlaws won their fourth straight game. He scored two of his goals in the fourth quarter while also contributing an assist.

Matthews, who recorded his third "hat trick" of the season, is the first player to be named as the Cascade Rookie of the Week three times in the same season since Kevin Huntley of the Los Angeles Riptide earned the award three times in 2008. He is also one of three players to earn the award at least three times in a season, joining Huntley and Boyle, who had a league-record five awards in 2004.

Matthews ranks sixth on the Outlaws' team with 21 points and has scored 14 goals with 7 assists this season. He has scored 9 of his 14 goals in the last three games.

The MLL season continues on Saturday with four games. The Bayhawks will host the Long Island Lizards in a game that will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network while the Cannons welcome the Ohio Machine to Harvard Stadium. In addition, Denver will visit Rochester while Hamilton hosts Charlotte.
