The Denver Outlaws remain the only undefeated team in the League after defeating the Chesapeake Bayhawks 13-9 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md. Saturday night.
Eric Law's five goals, Jeremy Sievert's three goals, and Brendan Mundorf's goal and two assists led the way for the Outlaws in the rematch of the 2012 MLL Championship Game. Denver remains in first place at 7-0 and the Bayhawks remain in third with a record of 4-3.
The first quarter couldn't have been much closer. Last week's Cascade Rookie of the Week, the Outlaws' Eric Law, scored the first goal of the contest, giving Denver the early lead. Chesapeake would respond though, getting goals from Steve Brooks and Matt Abbott. Denver's Chris Bocklet closed out the scoring for the quarter with his 20th goal of the season, making him the second MLL player to reach 20 goals and tying the game at 2-2 heading into the second quarter.
Denver started to pull away in the second quarter, with Law's second goal of the game and an unassisted goal from Jeremy Sieverts. Ben Hunt recorded an unassisted goal for the Bayhawks, but Denver quickly scored two more from Brendan Mundorf and Will Mangan to head into halftime up 6-3 on the defending MLL Champions.
The third quarter started with much of the same for the Outlaws as they jumped out to a 9-4 lead halfway through the quarter on goals from Law and two from Sieverts, completing hat tricks for both. Chesapeake didn't roll over though, ending the quarter on a three goal run, trailing only by two, 9-7. Chesapeake's goals were scored by John Grant Jr., Michael Kimmel, and Ben Rubeor—extending Rubeor's consecutive games with a point streak to 36 games.
Denver never gave up the lead, scoring two more goals in the fourth from Law and Drew Snider. Chesapeake's Drew Westervelt, last week's Warrior Offensive Player of the Week, and Matt Abbott both scored, but it was too little too late as the Outlaws got two more goals from Law and Snider to win the game by a score of 13-9.
Both goalies, Outlaws Jesse Schwartzman and Bayhawks Kip Turner, played great between the pipes. Schwartzman made 17 saves on 26 shots on goal, while Turner made 19 saves on 32 shots on goal.
Next weekend the Bayhawks will travel to Charlotte to face the Hounds on Saturday, June 22 at 5:30p.m. The Outlaws return home to host the s Ohio Machine at 8p.m., also on Saturday June 22. Both games will be broadcast nationally on CBS Sports Network.
